With the increase of head injuries in sports and their potential long-term effects, our office has implemented baseline screening of patients participating in athletic programs. The testing involves answering questions from a computerized program that can be completed in our office. It measures multiple aspects of cognitive brain functioning including evaluating working memory, attention span, sustained and selective attention time, reaction times, nonverbal problem solving and response variability. Impact testing does what CT, MRI, EEGs, can’t do, provides a more objective evaluation of brain functioning. Impact testing has been called the cornerstone of appropriate concussion management by sports medicine specialists. It helps us provide a method for review with neurologists, neuropsychologists and other specialists, should a head injury arise, and has become an integral part of our evaluation process, both before and after head injuries.
